WAYNE M. WARNER
Creation calls

Sunrise in the Swiss Alps announced God’s love to Jill Briscoe. “At least,” she wrote, “that is where it all began.”

Vacationing with her parents in Switzerland and finding no overnight lodging, the family decided to sleep in their compact car. Being small, it did not allow much rest, so she got up and wandered over to a small ridge overlooking the famed mountains. “And there I watched the sunrise,” she wrote. Later, she read a section in the Bible that told her God revealed Himself in nature (Romans 1:20). She had never read it, but said, “I did ‘read’ that sunrise, and a huge sense of God’s glory overwhelmed me. Along with that came a corresponding consciousness of my own unworthiness.”

There was no sun when I stepped outside the lonely, abandoned factory at 5:00 a.m. to check a boiler room door. Frost blanketed the area with a polar cap of frigid air, erasing the twinkling stars from an otherwise clear April sky. The wintry mood precluded all appearance of spring, until out of the vacuum of the night I heard, clearly and radiantly, the song of a robin. I was discouraged, working a second job as a security guard, and the melody I heard was a clear, lovely hymn of hope. Glued in my tracks, I stared skyward.

Without faith, life diminishes, but God’s creation calls us to experience anew the God who wants to reveal Himself to us.
